Indian ringnecks were one of the first parrots ever kept by humans, prized in ancient India over 2,000 years ago, where they were considered sacred and often taught to recite religious verses by priests. Only the males develop the distinctive black-and-rose neck ring, and they don't get it until around three years of age — so a ringneck without a ring isn't necessarily female; it might just be a teenager.
